We Will Remember

Dear Grace,

Thank-you for your kind words, your courage, and gift to a very grumpy, grizzled veteran.

Remembrance Day is a raw emotional event. A self-defense mechanism deployed, by the veteran, is to scowl and growl at anyone who dares engage. Demeanor is further affected by the cold chill on bones, nagging shrapnel bumps, heightened scanning of the crowd, and import of the day.

Holding your artwork you approached from a distance then hesitated. He was looking in your direction. The big breath you took and next step forward did not go unnoticed. You kept walking until you stood one pace in front of him, offered up your painting, smiled and said, “Thank-you”. When the veteran bent down to hear you, it was only then he realized, you, being all of maybe seven years old, just touched his heart with you sweet kindness.

Many years later, your honour of Remembrance Day is well kept and looked upon often. The brush strokes invoke the little girl who thoughtfully painted it and brought a gentle tear to a random veteran.

Every year your Ward 14 Councillor Peter Demong hosts a Ward 14 Communities BBQ. This is a free event for those that call Ward 14 home. Bring your family out and enjoy a free Spolumbo’s sausage, meet the different city departments, visit some of the local groups and MOST importantly find your community association table and get your FREE community membership. This BBQ event is also a community association membership drive. Thanks to our amazing sponsors we are able to cover the cost of community memberships that are sold during this event. So come out and enjoy what will be another great BBQ.

Time to declutter before Winter comes!

Clean out your closets, drawers, garages, basements and sheds and turn those unwanted items into $$ on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. If you do not have enough stuff, join up with a neighbour or make it a street event! Let’s make this year’s Garage Sale a big success for all of us out there “selling our stuff”.

To register and have your garage or yard sale advertised free of charge, please contact Dorothea Sautter or the Deer Ridge Community Association with your name, address, phone number, and email address. Lawn signs, directional maps, and a list of all participating homes will be available for pick-up at 155 Deermont Way SE – beside the Outdoor Rinks & Gardens – the evening before the sale.

On the morning of the sale, directional signs will be placed on the main streets directing buyers into the community.

Registration deadline is September 7th, 2019.
